Antonio Citterio studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic, taking his diploma in 1972, the year he also opened a joint practice in Lissone with Paolo Nava. Antonio Citterio at first worked solely as an industrial designer for B&B Italia, Flexform, Kartell, Hansgrohe, Iittala, and JCDecaux; he later designed office furniture for Vitra and Hermann Miller and lighting for Ansorg, Flos, Belux, Artemide and others. Antonio Citterio's designs feature cutting-edge technology and materials yet are timeless.
In 1986 Antonio Citterio designed "Sity", a sofa for B&B Italia; in 1990 he collaborated with the designer Glen Oliver Löw to produce the "Antonio Citterio Collection" of ergonomic office chairs for Vitra. In 1994 Antonio Citterio designed (for Kartell) "Mobile", a mobile container of translucent plastic, a novel invention which caused a sensation at the time.
From 1981 Antonio Citterio also worked as an architect and interior designer. From 1987 until 1996 he ran a practice with his wife, Terry Dwan. In 1999 he founded a new practice in Milan: Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel and Partners. As an interior designer, Antonio Citterio has designed numerous flagship stores, for Cerruti (Milan 1996, New York 1999), Emanuel Ungaro (Paris 1999), Stefanel (Milan 2000), Zegna Sport (Los Angeles 2000), and Valentino (Milan 2001).
Antonio Citterio was awarded the coveted Compasso d'Oro in 1979 and 1987.
