Nguyen Manhkhan' Quasar

1934 Hanoi

Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1934, Nguyen Manhkhan'n worked as a designer in France in the 1960s, where he became famous under the pseudonym Quasar. Between 1955 and 1958, Quasar studied mechanical engineering in Paris at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. Shifting his focus, Quasar designed a small experimental car in 1964: the Quasar Unipower consists of a glass cube on small wheels with sliding glass doors and inflatable plastic seats inside. The British firm Unipower even made the car in 1967-68 in a very limited edition.
Other 1967-68 Quasar designs were inflatable plastic furnishings made of colored and transparent. Quasar developed a sofa, the "Relax" daybed, and interchangeable modular elements as well as the "Apollo" and "Venus" inflatable armchairs. In addition, Quasar designed "Suspension Aérospace", a round pendent lamp of white and transparent PVC. Like the "Blow" armchair (1967) designed by De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi, some Quasar furniture consists solely of an inflatable film skin.
Other Quasar furnishings are made of air cushions fitted together. In 1966 Quasar developed an inflatable living room. In 1969 the inventive designer founded Quasar-France, to make the inflatable objects known collectively as the Collection Aérospace.
