Hague School
The Hague School is named for the place where this group of artists was founded, The Hague in the Netherlands. The Hague School formed at the end of the 19th century, based on the model of the French Barbizon School. The Hague School aspired accordingly to a renewal of Dutch landscape painting; a favorite theme of the Hague School is the bleak coastal scenery of the Dutch coast. Often, however, the residents of this area were integrated into the pictures. Important representatives of the Hague School are: Anton Mauve, Willem Maris, Jacob Matthijs, Henri Mesdag, Willem Roelofs.
