Félix Hilaire Buhot

1847 Valogues (Normandie)
1898 Paris

The French painter, graphic artist, and illustrator Félix Hilaire Buhot was born on July 9, 1847 in Valogues (Normandy). In 1865, the artist went to Paris and became a member of the École des Beaux-Arts as a student of Isidore Pils (1813–75) one year later. In addition, he studied painting and drawing with teachers such as Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran (1802–97) and Jules Noël (1815–81).
In 1872, Félix Hilaire Buhot taught at the College Rollin as a coach. He first learned etching around this time. From this point on, he worked on perfecting etching for the rest of his life. He created his first etchings with animal studies, as well as the Norman genre and street scenes. In addition to the strictly etching, Buhot also combined different techniques like copperplate engraving, aquatint, etc., as well as also using various types of ink and paper.
In 1875, the artist celebrated his salon début with the watercolor "Eventail-japonisme pour Mme Beaugrand". Buhot also attempted to participate in the salon with oil paintings for the years 1877, 1882, and 1889, but was rejected. The artist showed special interest in the effects of the weather such as rain, snow, and fog. He also produced many prints of cityscapes and sea pieces. He found inspirations for everyday city life in his direct neighborhood and around the Boulevard de Clichy (Paris). Especially in the years 1874–79, he painted Parisian street scenes usually in the rain or in the winter ("Winter in Paris", 1879; "National Holiday on the Boulevard de Clichy", 1878). Félix Hilaire Buhot also created cityscapes with scenes from London ("Westminster Palace" and "Westminster Bridge", both 1884) during his many trips to England in the years 1876–93.
Beginning in 1882, the artist visited Brittany on a regular basis and moved there permanently in 1889. Together with Edgar Degas (1834–1917), Camille Pissaro (1830–1903), Félix Braquemond (1833–1914), and others, he was a co-founder of the Société des Peintres Graveurs at that time. The works of the artist also found recognition in the USA during the following years. Frederick Keppel organized individual exhibitions in New York that took place in 1888.
Félix Hilaire Buhot died on April 26, 1898 at the age of 51 years in Paris after experiencing severe depression.
