Zero

"ZERO" is the name of a group of artists that formed in Düsseldorf in 1957/58. The founders of "ZERO" were Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. In 1963, the manifesto of the group, "ZERO – the New Idealism", appeared, in which the name "ZERO" was also explained: "Zero is quiet. Zero is the beginning". In fact, the artists of the group, whom others like Günther Uecker and international artists such as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Yves Klein also joined, were against informel and abstract expressionism. Instead, the artists worked with new spatial concepts, pure colors and new technologies which made their works mobile and thus integrated light reflections into them.
Correspondingly, the manifesto also said: "Zero is round. Zero rotates". ZERO also participated in documenta III in 1964 with such light-kinetic installations, for example. However, already by 1966, the group dissolved because of differing views of art.
