Malcolm Garrett

1956 Northwich

The British graphic designer Malcolm Garrett studied typography and graphic communications at Reading University in the 1970s before going on to Manchester Polytechnic to study graphic design. While studying in Manchester, Malcolm Garrett came into contact with the Punk movement, which had been big there since The Sex Pistols made the front pages in 1976. Malcolm Garrett began to design posters and record sleeves for Punk bands.
In 1978 Malcolm Garrett opened Assorted Images, a graphic design studio, and worked for the music industry, designing the sleeves for Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Culture Club, and Phil Collins.
In 1986 Malcolm Garrett discovered the multiple new possibilities afforded by Apple Macintosh and turned increasingly to digital technology.
Malcolm Garrett's studio was one of the first to substitute the computer workstation for the draftsman's table. Malcolm Garret now produced multimedia features for the music CDs of Oasis and the Spice Girls. In 1994 Malcolm Garrett joined forces with Alisdair Scott to found AMX, a multimedia agency. As its creative director, Malcolm Garrett pioneered interactive design and the new interactive media, making good use of the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, a technique that was not user friendly at the outset because it was so complex. Malcolm Garrett played a paramount role in making it simpler, more user-friendly, and even visually appealing.
Malcolm Garrett has created internet conferencing as well as multimedia presentations for numerous firms. Another area in which Malcolm Garrett and AMX are engaged is interactive television, which is being developed in Great Britain for both the BBC and Sky.
