Julian Schnabel

The painter, sculptor and film director Julian Schnabel was born in New York City in 1951. From 1969 to 1973 Schnabel studied at the University of Houston in Texas. During this time, Schnabel came into contact with the most famous representatives of the influential New York concept and minimal art and performance scene of the time.
He did, however, turn his back on their trends and intensively studied European painting. In 1976 Julian Schnabel held his first exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. The very same year Julian Schnabel went to Paris and Milan. In 1977 Schnabel's first European exhibition took place in Düsseldorf.
He became famous for his neo-Expressionist pieces, which he mostly painted on uneven surfaces of broken glass or porcelain and in super-sized formats. In 1983 Schnabel also began to work on sculptures. In the 1990s he was active as a screenwriter and director of the films "Basquiat" (1996) and "Before Night Falls" (2000).
His last film was awarded the grand jury prize at Venice.
