Mimmo Paladino

Born in Paduli near Benevent, Domenico Paladino has been in contact with art since an early age. His first encounter with art was at the house of his uncle, a painter, who introduced him to traditional and contemporary painting. In 1964 Mimmo Paladino visited the Venice Biennale, where he was particularly impressed by the works of Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine. The same year, Paladino entered the Benevent art school and began to work with non-representational painting using elements of collage. During this time the young artist particularly admired the works of Max Ernst and Paul Klee. After his graduation in 1968, Mimmo Paladino decided not to continue his academic studies but to educate himself autodidactically. Inspired by mythological motives, the artist dedicated the early 1970s exclusively to drawing.
In 1977 Mimmo Paladino's first exhibition took place at the "Lucio Amelio" gallery in Naples, where Paladino developed his idea of holistic drawing by painting an entire wall with pastels in a fresco-like manner. Paladino's works were accompanied by several trips to Milan, where he met the critic Tommaso Trini, his later gallerist Franco Toselli and others. In 1978 the painter first presented his works and murals, which remained characteristic of his works, in Franco Toselli's gallery.
In the same year the artist traveled to New York for the first time. In 1980 Paladino published a book with texts by Achille Bonito Oliva together with editor Emilio Mazzoli in Modena. In the early 1980s the painter traveled through Brasil several times. Since the mid 1970s Mimmo Paladino has been represented at numerous international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale in 1980, the Sydney Biennale in 1982 and "documenta 7" in Kassel in the same year.
Today Mimmo Paladina is one of the main exponents of the Italian Transavanguardia around Clemente, Cucchi and Chia.
