Neo Rauch

Neo Rauch was born on April 18, 1960 in Leipzig. He grew up with his grandparents in Aschersleben, after his parents had lost their lives in a train accident right after his birth. In 1981, Rauch began to study art at the "Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst" in Leipzig, initially under Arno Rink and from 1986 as a master student under Professor Bernhard Heisig.
After his studies Neo Rauch became Heisig's assistant from 1993 to 1998. With the end of the euphoria over the "Young British Artists", the "Leipzig School", which was already regarded as being synonymous for realistic painting, moved into the limelight of international art.
From 1999 Neo Rauch, who is known as one of the main exponents of the "Neue Leipziger Schule", became the star of the international art scene, particularly in the USA. In contrary to Neo Rauch's own interests and intentions, the London gallerist and trend setter Charles Saatchi and the New York art critic Roberta Smith declared him the painter of the zeitgeist, triggering a true "Rauch-mania" in the US. Since then, no major exhibition could have done without works by Neo Rauch.
In August 2005 the Leipzig university gave Neo Rauch the chair of painting and he succeeding his former professor Arno Rink. Neo Rauch lives and works in a mill near Leipzig with his wife Rosa Loy.
