Rainer Fetting

1949 Wilhelmshaven
- lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und New York

Having completed an apprenticeship as carpenter alongside voluntary service as stage designer at the "Landesbühne Niedersachsen", Rainer Fetting studied at the Berlin "Hochschule der Künste" under Professor Jaenisch from 1972 to 1978. When he was still a master student, he founded the "Galerie am Moritzplatz" together with Helmut Middendorf, Salomé, Bernd Zimmer, Anne Jud and Berthold Schepers, which was also the venue of his first exhibition. Later this group of artists became known as "Junge Wilde".
Alongside pictures of figures and portraits, he painted Berlin cityscapes, with the Wall as the central motif. Rainer Fetting explored stylistic means based on Impressionism and Expressionism. In 1978 a DAAD scholarship enabled him to spend considerable time in New York, where Fetting added dynamic line management and a bright color scheme to his work, which had hitherto primarily been influenced by a two-dimensional gestical structure.
In 1981 he participated in the exhibition "A New Spirit in Painting", which was organized by Christos M. Joachimides at the Royal Academy of Arts. Solo exhibitions in numerous European and American galleries followed almost annually. Since 1984 Rainer Fetting has been creating pieces of art, in which he mounted driftwood onto canvas, painted over it and integrated it into the picture composition.
In the second half of the 1980s he produced his first works in bronze, including the bronze sculpture "Willy Brandt", which he made for the SPD party headquarters in Bonn, now standing in Berlin. Several pieces from his earlier years were about the city of New York. In them, the artist focused on the dark edges of the metropolis.
The artist was one of the main protagonists of a style of painting moving towards representational art, strong color schemes and a fierce brush flow, which was observed throughout Europe but mainly in Italy and Germany in the early 1980s.
