Wolfgang Petrick was born in 1939 in Berlin. After Petrick had already begun studying biology, he changed directions and went to the College for Visual Arts and studied under Professor Volkert. In 1969, he became one of the co-founders of the legendary exhibition group "Großgörschen 35".
Petrick's works, which he dedicated to social-critical themes, were often presented as assemblages. In 1969, the artist received the prize for painting from the city of Wolfsburg, and two years later, a stipend from Cité des Arts sent Petrick to Paris. Wolfgang Petrick was a well respected illustrator, who was awarded the gold medal at the 3rd Biennale Internazionale della Grafica in Florence in 1972.
With other artists formerly of the group "Großgörschen 35", including Peter Sorge und Hans Jürgen Diehl, Petrick joined the group "Aspekt" in 1972 to further the ideas of Critical Realism. In the beginning of the 1970's, Wolfgang Petrick worked as a theater set designer and, later in 1975, was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts Berlin. The German Critics' Prize was awarded to Petrick in 1981.
Wolfgang now lives and works in Berlin and also in New York since 1994.
