Helmut Bätzner

1928 Stuttgart

Helmut Bätzner served an apprenticeship as a carpenter before studying architecture at the "Technische Hochschule" in Stuttgart. In 1962-63 Helmut Bätzner studied in Rome, afterwards teaching at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld until 1966. From 1964 Helmut Bätzner freelanced as an architect and designer.
From 1964 until 1966 Helmut Bätzner designed the "Model No. BA 1171" chair for Bofinger, which is also known as the "Bofinger Chair". Made of plastic molded in one piece, this chair was ideal for mass production since the entire production cycle of the "prepreg" pre-impregnation compression molding process only takes five minutes and virtually no subsequent finishing is required. The Bofinger chair was launched at the 1966 Cologne Furniture Fair and 120 000 exemplars have been produced since then. It has been the model for innumerable plastic garden chairs.
As an architect, Helmut Bätzner collaborated with the architect Rolf Gutbrod and others in building the Liederhalle in Stuttgart (1951-56). In Karlsruhe the Badisches Staatstheater was built (1970-75) after Helmut Bätzner's plans.
