Albert Oehlen is regarded one of the protagonists of German Neo-expressionism. His impressive oeuvre does not only comprise paintings, but also drawings and graphic works, installations, collages, computer art, stage design, photography and records.
Albert Oehlen, son of a comic and graphic artist, was born in Krefeld in 1954. After he did an apprenticeship in a publishing house, Albert Oehlen enrolled at the Hamburg School for Visual Arts in 1978. The personal artistic style of Albert Oehlen, which features an expressive and easy-going duct that is full of relish, a lush coloring, ironic subjects and at times with provocative titles, brings the artist close to the circle of neo-expressive painters. As the painting process happens in an obsessive subjective manner, the Neo-expressionists were also referred to as "Neue Wilde" (New Wild Ones), their pictures are described as "Heftige Malerei" (Wild Paintings). What is so characteristic of Albert Oehlen‘s picture language is an increasingly abstract element, a continuous development towards non-representational painting. In 2000 Albert Oehlen was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, the same year he made a tremendously large floor mosaic called "Bionic Boogie (Ich, Wasser, Technik)" in context of the art project "In Between" on the premises of the EXPO 2000 in Hanover.
Together with artists such as Martin Kippenberger, Werner Büttner, Heimo Zobernig, Georg Herold, Jörg Immendorff or his brother Markus Oehlen, he has realized art projects since the 1970s. Albert Oehlen‘s works are highly esteemed on the international art market and were shown in renowned international museums like the Hamburg ‘Deichtorhallen‘ (1994), the Kunsthalle Basel (1997), the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg (2002) or the Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris (2009).
