Fritz Genkinger

1934 Tübingen

Fritz Genkinger was born in 1934 in Tübingen and grew up in Nürtingen. He worked as a tool mechanic up until his entrance into the National Academy of Visual Arts in Karlruhe in 1957. After his studies under HAP Grieshaber and Herbert Kitzel, Genkinger settled as a freelance painter first in Karlsruhe then moved to Stuttgart in 1968. He then worked as a guest lecturer at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Stuttgart beginning in 1970.
Fritz Genkinger received a stipend from the "Cité Internationale des Arts" in 1972 which enabled him to spend a year in Paris. While in the beginning of his career Fritz Genkinger painted in an expressionistic style which became more and more overlayered with the distorted images characteristic of his idol Francis Bacon, he quickly realized the danger of this direction of development. Searching for his own unmistakable style, he always returned to his love of soccer. He then created his "Fußballbilder" ("Soccer Paintings"), in which form and color tumble about the surface.
In 1974, Fritz Genkinger moved to Rielingshausen/Marbach am Neckar. There he worked on big commissions, for example large format posters for the German Federal Press Office and various postage stamp series, including for the World Soccer Championship for Paraguay. In the years following, he produced further commissioned and independent works which thematically dealt with sports, especially soccer. In 1995, Genkinger resettled in Münsingen-Böttingen.
On the occasion of his 70th birthday in 2004, the artist presented new pieces inspired by the so-called "Böttinger marble." The new works treat history as layers of time.
