Sandro Chia

1946 Florenz
- lebt und arbeitet in Ronciglione bei Rom und in New York

Sandro Chia studied drawing, fresco painting and sculpture at the "Instituto d'Art" in Florence between 1962 and 1969. In the late 1960s he travelled through India, Turkey and Europe. In 1970 Sandro Chia settled in Rome, where he held his first exhibition at the "Galleria La Salita" in 1971.
From the early 1980s until 1999 he had an additional studio in New York. In 1980 he received a year-long scholarship from the German city of Mönchengladbach. In 1985 Chia set up a bronze sculpture called "Passione per l'arte" in the town square of Bielefeld, which had been commissioned by the city itself. A short time later he was commissioned to paint the interior of a hall in the Equitable Center in New York and a monumental four-part mural on the Siena Palio.
During the 1970s Chia focused on concept art, with Yves Klein's monochromes having a particularly significant influence on the artist. Towards the middle of the century painting regained increasing importance as the aritist's primary form of expression.
Along with Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladina, Sandro Chia belongs to the main exponents of Italian Transavanguardia, which developed in Italy during the second half of the seventies and rediscovered classical themes using a figured painting technique. Up until the present day figured-representational pictures have often been produced in connection with the artist's own texts and poems, which reflect tradition and history in a subjective-expressive way. T
he artist's participation at "documenta 7" in 1982 and at the Venice Biennale in 1988 reflect his international importance. Since 1999 Sandro Chia has lived at Castello Romitoria near Siena with his family.
